David H. Levy, Amateur Astronomer & Writer Discovers Comets!

David Levy is a Canadian astronomer and writer. He is perhaps most famous for his co-discovery in 1993 of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, due to the fact that this comet collided with the planet Jupiter in 1994.

Levy was born in Montreal, Canada. He obtained Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Acadia University and Queen’s University, respectively. Even though he has had an interest in astronomy very early in his life, interestingly, his degrees are in English literature.

Levy has discovered 22 comets including nine of them using his own telescopes in his backyard in Southern Arizona. The Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet, which he discovered with Eugene and Carolyn Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory in California, ended with a brilliant explosion when it collided with Jupiter.

David Levy has written over 30 books and articles, including the magazines "Parade Magazine" & "Sky and Telescope". Books he has authored include "The Quest for Comets" and a biography "Shoemaker by Levy". He also has appeared or contributed with his celestial knowledge on various television programs including the Discovery Channel and National Geographic specials.

Levy has received numerous awards for his comet hunting achievements. He currently hosts an internet radio show with his wife Wendee, www.letstalkstars.com, which covers topics such as Celestron's GPS product SkyScout, amateur astronomy personalities such as Scott W. Roberts and astronauts, and astronomical topics such as eclipses and comets.
